Our Vision

We believe that zero traffic deaths is an achievable and just goal. Every person in New Jersey has the right to travel safely each day, without the risk of death or serious injuries on our roadways, no matter how or when they travel.

ZERO is the only acceptable number of deaths on our roadways.

Guiding Principles of Vision Zero New Jersey Alliance

  1. Safe Systems Approach - We believe the following principles in relation to the Safe Systems Approach:

    1. Death & Serious Injuries are Unacceptable

    2. Humans Make Mistakes

    3. Humans are Vulnerable

    4. Responsibility is Shared

    5. Safety is Proactive

    6. Redundancy is Crucial

  2. Mobility Justice, Equity & Inclusion - We recognize the impact of systemic racism and other forms of oppression on our infrastructure, especially in historically underserved communities. We believe that everyone should be considered in the development of our transportation system. This includes NJ residents of all ages and abilities, racial and ethnic backgrounds, immigration status, and income.

  3. Community Engagement - Community engagement must be included in any plans or transportation projects because people know their own communities best.

  4. Freedom - We believe people should have the freedom of mobility, of access to jobs/schools/etc., and movement.

  5. Enforcement - Where we can minimize the need for enforcement, we should, particularly by investing in equitable infrastructure, safe street designs and policies. Laws that protect vulnerable road users should be enforced consistently and equitably, and policies must be in place to ensure they do not lead to discriminatory practices.

  6. Data-Driven Decision Making - We need reliable data to help drive our decisions for making our transportation network safe.

  7. Moral Imperative - Deaths on our roadways are preventable and we must change our current trend.

  8. Accountability - We need transparency and accountability when it comes to implementing our goals for an equitable transportation network.

Vision Zero Goals
We urge New Jersey lawmakers, policy-makers, agencies, and the public…

Infrastructure

  1. NJDOT must  focus on safety and mobility as their top priorities. These priorities must not be a balance with throughput. We must provide safe, complete, and continuous bicycle and pedestrian networks.

  2. Providing alternatives to driving, with cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as public transit, can also help reach our goal of reducing vehicle miles traveled (VMT).

  3. We need an aggressive plan to address safety issues at the most dangerous intersections and road corridors, making temporary improvements in the short term.

  4. Dedicated funding at NJDOT and MPOs for infrastructure projects that follow Vision Zero principles.

Policy & Legislation

  1. Adoption of state, county, and local vision zero policies.

  2. Establishment of Vision Zero Task Forces to accomplish policy implementation at state, county, and municipal levels.

Education

  1. Broad awareness of possibility and strategies for vision zero.

  2. Guidance for local municipalities to develop and implement vision zero.

Safe Systems

  1. Safe roads, safe road users, safe speed, safe vehicles.

Data

  1. Publicly available crash data for the entire state.

  2. Reform of data collection for crashes, with a focus on completion and accuracy.
